Canyon Ridge

This terrific hike near Tower Falls traverses the rim of a narrow canyon that features tall spires, basalt formations, and hydrothermal activity.

On the drive up this fellow was headed back the other way - traffic slowed.

The trail takes off from down near the Yellowstone River and climbs straight up to a ridge above the river. We were impressed by the roots of these trees that hung out over the canyon.

Once up on the ridge, we walked along a fairly level trail as it looked down on the Yellowstone River to the southwest and...

across to the beautiful sagebrush meadows to the northeast.

More lovely canyon views.

As we continued on the walls of the canyon got extremely tall.

A welcoming trail marmot.

After two miles the canyon opened up with views up the Yellowstone River as the valley broadens.

Lunch spot.

Views up the broadened valley were our lunch view.

There was plenty of evidence that bison inhabit this high plateau and just to the left of our lunch spot was this buffalo wallow.

On the way back we passed by the towers of Tower Fall (the fall was not visible) and...

basalt columns.

A chimney rock. (Have you enlarged the photos? That's the best way to see the details.)

And more canyon views in...

the afternoon sunlight.

Today's hike:
Length - 4.16 miles
Duration - 2 hours, 21 minutes (including lunch)
Elevation gain - 676 feet
