Kalamazoo

The sun was shining and it was a glorious drive to Kalamazoo and the home of Paul and Josie, my brother and his wife. For the first time we are experiencing a "courtesy parking" situation; we are parked out in front of my brother's house for the night. Fortunately Kalamazoo does not have a regulation that prohibits overnight parking on the street and fortunately my brother has 30 amp electrical service in his driveway that we can use to plug in the Airstream so the furnace fan does not run down our batteries. I don't think that it is supposed to be as cold tonight as it was last night (32 degrees).

We stopped at the Turkeyville Rest Stop about 33 miles from Kalamazoo.  We just couldn't pass up an rest stop with the name Turkeyville.

In the Rest Stop parking area, just down the row from us, was this new horse trailer. It was silver and shiny, and I like that you are able to carry hay, or straw, on the top of the trailer for the horses.

We had a lovely time visiting with Paul and Josie and a great meal at a Greek Restaurant. After dinner Paul took us on a tour of Kalamazoo. The Upjohn company began in Kalamazoo. They have now been bought by Pfizer, but the Upjohn family still lives in an around Kalamazoo. The Upjohns, together with the Striker family (hospital equipment, orthopedic devices, artificial joints, etc.), have made a lot of money but have also given back to the community. The Kalamazoo Promise, which provides college tuition to Kalamazoo students, is one example.

An attraction in Kalamazoo is the Air Zoo. Not only do they display a variety of planes but they also do historic plane restoration.

There was this colorful plane in front of the Air Zoo.

On a street with beautiful houses was this giant pumpkin made from lights. It was quite dramatic.
