City of Rocks

New Mexico appears to be more desert-like than Arizona, or rather, the desert is more dusty and sandy. Along I-10, we frequently pass this series of 4 signs -
CAUTION  - Dust Storms May Exist ....

Use Extreme Caution...

Do Not Stop In Travel Lanes..

(and my favorite)   Zero Visibility Possible.

As we continued east on I-10 we passed a variety of scenery. Jagged mountains,...

snowcapped mountain ranges,...

arid plateaus, and...

isolated, pointy peaks.

Near Deming we turned northwest and admired this decorated highway embankment.

Thirty-five miles north of Deming this sentinel greeted us as we arrived at City of Rocks State Park.

We turned west toward this very, unusual landscape of...

rocks.

One description of this park that I read called it "more a village than 'city'" and that it had a quirky, cartoonish beauty. We didn't take the time to go out a explore it this afternoon.

It was cold (39 degrees right now) and going down below freezing tonight.

We did go out a take a few pictures to show you. That's Frederick at the base of the rock for scale.
