Moon over Miami

We were just outside and the moon tonight is either full or very close to it.  What sprang to mind was the song - "Moon over Miami." We are leaving Miami tomorrow so I'm glad we had such a beautiful moon tonight.

It turns out that we are right next to the Miami Zoo - or, as it is called here - Zoo Miami. Today being our last day a visit to the zoo was on the schedule. And what a fabulous zoo it is! It is the only sub-tropical zoo in the country and a lot of the exhibits are straight out of Africa, southern Asia, Australia and South America.

Beautiful entrance road.

We began by taking the monorail around the entire park.  Not only did we get a birds-eye view of the exhibits but it was narrated and so we got ideas for where we wanted to go on the ground.

Monorail station.

Once back on the ground we started around the zoo in numerical order. #1 was a tiger. It was a hot day and Mr. tiger was snoozing away on a cliff shelf in the shade. Right next to the beginning exhibits was an attraction called Dr. Wilde's World of Discovery. We didn't go in, but, would you believe, outside the building was a showing of lego animals! Florida seems to have an attraction to legos. Here are a couple of my favorites.

Tropical monkeys.

Polar bear.

I took tons of pictures, one of almost every animal, and here are some of the highlights.

Sleepy Komodo Dragon.

Bactrian Camel.

Gerenuk. Very slender and delicate.

Giraffe in an exhibit with zebra and ostrich. They share a common environment in the wild.

Black rhino.

The settings, enclosures and landscaping of the zoo was spectacular. Lush with sub-tropical plants, many blooming with vibrant colored flowers.

Since it wasn't a botanical garden, there were no names posted for the plants. I thought this was such a beautiful color.

View across the lake. Notice flowering tree on the far side.  There were also swan paddle boats available.

I couldn't resist this picture. It reminded me of the movie Jurassic Park
That's the monorail track. This looked like the building in "Jurassic Park" where they kept the velociraptors.

We only got to see about half of what there was to see at the zoo.  We saw most of the animal exhibits but almost none of the special exhibits.

  1. It looks like you had a great time of it at the Lego Zoo. Some of those lego animals looked especially life-like. Could you have just pulled your Air Stream into a vacant space and stayed at the zoo awhile longer? People would enjoy hearing the name of the place where you were staying. Enjoy!

  2. For the past seven days, April 8 - April 14, we were at the Larry and Penny Thompson County Campground. Larry Thompson was a journalist for the Miami Herald.
