World's largest exposed piece of granite

Most of you know that one of the guides for our trip is Albert Dickas' book, "101 American geo-sites you've gotta see." Each state is included with as least one site; some have two and some overachievers have three, four or more.  California and Wyoming each have five.

Georgia has one site - Stone Mountain, Georgia.  Located just outside Atlanta, 14-miles east of the intersection of I-75 and I-85, the 1,686-foot-high promontory of Stone Mountain, billed as the world's largest exposed piece of granite, dominates the countryside. This is where we are camped for the next five days, Stone Mountain Park Campground.

It was a genuinely lovely drive through central Georgia today.  We were off the interstate for over half the trip and travelled through Georgia's "lake" county and "dairy" county. We hummed along, going about 50 miles-per-hour, passing gorgeous farms and rolling countryside. Pine forests served as a backdrop.  Of course, the fact that the sky was clear blue and the temperature was in the upper 60's and the humidity was down in the 35 - 40% range had something to do with our delight.

Halfway through the drive we stopped at a rest stop -

Lovely front of the rest stop.

We, of course, were in the back.

When we arrived, we set up, found the nearest Sam's and Publix, and set off to get our supplies for the next few days.

Stone Mountain Lake, about 4 campsites away.

First of many pictures of Stone Mountain.

  1. A pluton! They're like the little blobs in a lava lamp or rock hot air balloons :)
