Home Team BBQ

When we stopped in at the Charleston Visitor Center four days ago we inquired about bike trails and we were given directions to the West Ashley Greenway Trail.  This afternoon we set out on the trail that begins in a Charleston residential and commercial area, then travels past neighborhoods, schools, parks, and a marsh before reaching Johns Island and the turn-around point. The length of the trail was supposed to be 10.5 miles one way, but our bike computers only measured 18+ miles.

It was the perfect day for a bike ride. Upper 70s and low humidity.  At the start of the trail there were lots of other bicyclists and dog walkers, but by mid-way, we had the trail pretty much to ourselves. Except that towards the end, before the turn around, there were a fair number of people fishing in the coastal tide waters. When we asked, they said that they were fishing for flounder.

These men were actually casting a net.

A family Saturday afternoon spent fishing.

Beautiful bird looking for its supper.

We took one of the cross streets to the bike path and happened into this development of upscale homes. Notice how the living area begins on the second floor. These homes backed up to the Ashley River inter-coastal area.

A home under construction. You can see how it is actually up on piers.

This home was particularly dramatic.

Three quarters of the way the bike path was shaded.

Frederick wanted me to get a picture of the name of this cross street.

After the bike ride it was time for BBQ! We have been eating in, mostly, but before we left South Carolina we wanted to try some BBQ.  There certainly are enough signs advertising BBQ. We asked in the campground office and got the name of Home Team BBQ, about ten miles from the campground. Actually, it is on the Ashely River Road, but down some from the Plantations. It was great, a young crowd and a number of young families. The food was good too.

When we got to the parking lot we came face-to-face with the smokers.

It's on wheels so it can go off-site to parties.

The guys loading the smoker with wood.

Our dinners. Frederick's on top, mine on the bottom. Pulled pork for both of us and Frederick's sides were potato salad and chicken chili. My sides were poppy seed slaw and today's special, creamed kale. Love the way it is served, just put paper on a tray. At the table there was a variety of BBQ sauces.

We chose to eat on the back patio.

Part of the decor in the back.

This table of young people (you can also see them in the picture above) were right behind us and provided the entertainment. It appeared to be a bridal shower and the conversation that we could overhear was enlightening.

Tomorrow is moving day.  We are headed to North Carolina with a stop half way, back at the Magnolia Campground in Kinards, SC.

  1. Must have been a shock to your stomachs to have non-soup, glad you were able to enjoy a local eatery though. I would love to learn how to a BBQ like that.
