Sandia Mountains

ABQ's modest skyline is dominated by the Sandia Mountains to the east. This small mountain range -running about 17 miles north to south and 4 to 8 miles east to west - is steep and rugged. Sandia is the Spanish word for watermelon, and dramatic Southwestern sunsets often cast a pinkish hue over the mountains that reminded someone of the color of watermelon. Our tour guide yesterday gave the the assignment to photograph the mountains at sunset.

Here are the Sandia Mountains from the KOA RV park.

This is about 6 pm with the sun beginning to set.

Not too pinkish yet, unless you have an active imagination!

In less than a half hour there was a significant change.

The granite cliffs have a definite glorious pink hue.

The granite cliffs glowing at sunset.
