Makah Territory

Today we drove to the most Northwestern tip of the continental US and explored Cape Flattery and Shi Shi Beach.

The Northwestern tip is on the Makah Indian Reservation and the highway out to the tip is along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This is a viewpoint on the Strait looking west and...

looking east. The higher mountains are on Vancouver Island.

Our first stop was at the Makah Museum in Neah Bay, the last community before the tip. The reason why we have this picture of Frederick at the doors of the Museum is because they do not allow cameras in the Museum. The Museum houses the archaeological discoveries at the Makah Indian coastal village of Ozette. 500 years ago, possibly as the result of an earthquake, a mudslide buried the centuries-old village. In 1970 tidal erosion exposed the Ozette homes that had been perfectly preserved. Ten of thousands of artifacts were discovered and for 11 years excavated by Washington State University. The artifacts were very well presented and recreate the Makah's rich history as whalers, sealers, fishermen, hunters, gatherers, artists, basket-weavers, spinners and warriors.

After viewing the Museum we drove out to Cape Flattery and took the Coastal Trail out to several viewing platforms.

Interesting tree formations.

View out to the Pacific Ocean from the most Northwesterly point.

View south, along the coast.

View northeasterly toward the mountains on Vancouver Island. You might notice the large ship entering the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

South from another viewing platform.

Sea caves at the base of the Cape.

Tatoosh Island, just off Cape Flattery.

The large ship entering the Straight.

Looking down the Straight of Juan de Fuca with Vancouver Island in the distance.

We next drove south to the trailhead for the hike out to Shi Shi Beach. This was an interesting cantilevered bridge over a stream.

Seastack off Shi Shi Beach.

Magnificent seastacks off the beach.

Close-up with telephoto lens. we didn't have enough time to fully explore Shi Shi Beach - we'll have to return another time.

On the way back we stopped for some views of Cape Flattery from Hobuck Beach, just to the south of the Cape.

Today's combined hikes:
Length - 5.55 miles
Duration - 2 hours, 36 minutes
Elevation gain - 630 feet (63 floors on the Fitbit)
