Flattop Mountain Trail

Someone told us that the Flattop Mountain Trail is the most popular trail in Alaska - I guess because it is so close to Anchorage, the major population center. Located in Chugach State Park, this very popular 3 1/2 mile hike to the 3550 ft. peak, climbs steadily up two ridge lines before we had to scramble up to the summit. They say that in Los Angeles, you cruise the Sunset Strip; in Paris, you stroll the Champs-Elysees; and in Anchorage, you climb Flattop Mountain.

It's our last day in Anchorage, so despite some light rain, off we go to climb Flattop.

Beginning of the trail which looks more like a boulevard.

We could look up and see some hang gliders.

Scrambling up near the top.

Arriving at the flag!

We met a young man, Joel, who was traveling "around the world" from Florida. Thanks for taking our picture, Joel!

City of Anchorage from Flattop.

Our lunch view.

Lunch at the top.

The flat top of Flattop Mountain.

Looking out at Cook Inlet - I think I can see Russia!

Time to find a way down - there's no trail.

Looking back up the rock pile.

Ridge across the valley.

Looking back at the summit from near the bottom.

Using the telephoto lens.

Gnarly trees at the base of the mountain.

Today's hike:
Length - 3.69 miles
Duration - 3 hours, 14 minutes (including lunch)
Elevation gain - 1,290 feet (131 floors on the Fitbit)
