Trail tune-up

The signature attraction at St. Joe State Park, aside from the 9.5 miles snow-white sand beaches, is the Wilderness Preserve, the last seven miles of the peninsula. To enter the Preserve requires a special permit and there are several rules that govern access.  We are planning on taking the Wilderness Trail tomorrow, maybe to the very end. Now hiking seven miles (14 if you come back) is a challenge, but what makes the trail strenuous is walking through soft white sand the whole way. Our plan is to get an early start, and walk out on the soft sand trail. But, on the way back, at the six mile mark, there is access to the beach. On the way back we will go over to the beach and walk back on the harder, wet sand along the shore.

To tune-up for tomorrow, we took a couple of nature trails and tried the first mile of the Wilderness Trail.

Yesterday, driving back from the Picnic WiFi pavilion, we came across some park wildlife.

Sunday night's sunset.

Along the beach today, we saw this shell moving along the sand - there was a hermit crab inside, we think.

Then this big grey-blue bird landed.
