Tlingit Heritage

Today's drive has brought us to Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon Territories, a 254 mile drive from Watson Lake. Along the way -

Three miles out of the RV park our odometer clicked 70,000 miles - in 2 1/2 years.

The Yukon - lots of land...

not many people.

At the 68 mile mark, we stopped at Rancheria Falls Recreation Site and walked the 10 minute trail to see the 1st falls, and...

a little further along, the 2nd falls.

At the 152 mile mark, we arrived in Teslin and visited the Tlingit Heritage Center. The center highlights the last 200 years of Inland Tlingit history and includes displays on the lifestyles of the Tlingit people and "power of the mask." These five outdoor totems represent the Wolf, Eagle, Frog Beaver and Raven clans.

Meet Margaret Douville, a Tlingit, who described the process she uses to home tan moose hides. In her hand she is holding tanning soap of her own recipe that includes 5 ingredients - moose brains, moose fat, butter, something else, and Velveeta cheese! On the right in the picture above is a stiff, untanned moose hide. It takes her all winter to go through the tanning process and the cold temperatures help the process along.

After tanning, she uses this implement to remove the hair from the hide which is so thick that even this sharp implement cannot pierce the hide.

From the display cases -

    1. The Caravan Daily Driving Log will list interesting stops along the way and we can stop, or not, our choice. We usually try to stop, after all, "it's all about the journey!"
