Red Eagle Lake Trail

This morning was cold, rainy and windy so we stayed inside, toasty and warm, and did some much needed household catch-up tasks. This afternoon the sun came out so we went in search of an east side tune-up hike and found one about 2 miles from our campsite, just inside the Glacier National Park boundary. The trail ran through a pleasant landscape of coniferous forests, grassy meadows, and aspen groves. The Red Eagle Fire grazed the edge of the trail in 2006.

The fall is a beautiful time to hike through meadows and aspen groves.

Part of the trail is along St. Mary Lake. This is a view down the lake to Split Mountain from the trail and...

from down on the lake shore.

This mountain also dominates the view from our campground. According to the Ranger at the St. Mary Visitor Center it is called Single Shot Mountain. Allegedly someone killed a big-horned sheep on the mountain with a single shot. From such events legends are made.

Hike statistics:
Length - 7 miles
Elevation gain - 300 feet ( 56 floors on the Fitbit)
Duration - 2 hours, 50 minutes
