Athabasca Falls

Athabasca Falls, about 7 miles from our campsite, is Jasper's most dramatic and voluminous waterfall. Only 75 feet high, the heavy flow volume of the Athabasca River has cut deeply into the soft limestone rock, carving potholes, canyons and various water channels. After the river passes over the falls it continues north and passes our campground.

A deafening combination of sound, spray and water.

Potholes

Canyons

More canyons

We followed a trail to the outlet of the falls where these intrepid rafters were preparing to enter the water.

Everyone helped carry the boat to water's edge,

got ready to go, after a wave to the bystanders,

and away they went.

We watched until they disappeared around a bend in the river.

View from the right side of the falls.

We often see groups of these travelers in distinctive garb and...

Frederick was charmed by their footwear.

Spectacular falls.
