Tonight we are, quite literally, on the shores of the Humber River, in the Humber Valley in a campground called Gateway to the North RV Park. This refers to the fact that we are now on the Great Northern Peninsula in the western part of Newfoundland at the beginning of the Viking Trail. But first, before we head up north along the western edge, we will spend the next three days exploring the Humber Valley and Corner Brook, the second largest city in Newfoundland.
We walked to the end of the campground, went down some steps, and stood on the bank of the Humber River.
Deer Lake is still about forty miles to the coast and it is very wooded. Logging was, and still is, an important industry in the area.
This tractor was just at the top of the banks of the river.
There are rental canoes for treks on the river.
This little meadow is right behind the campground. There are lots of wildflowers.
As pretty as the scenery is that surrounds, this is not the most attractive campground we have stayed in. In fact, I'd say it is perhaps the least attractive. It bears a resemblance to a parking lot of RVs; several rows of RVs parked in a line. The facilities are nice - showers, bathroom, laundromat - spotlessly clean. I'm glad our plans call for us just spending the nights here.
Oh, another attraction, is just across the street; the Newfoundland Insectarium & Butterfly Pavilion. It has won a number of awards, so I hope we will have time to cross the street and visit.
There is this giant strawberry just to the right of the driveway into the campground. The sign calls attention to the Annual Strawberry Festival that just concluded last week.
