North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The North Rim of the Canyon had a number of the same views as the South Rim only, of course, seen from the other side of the canyon. Today was a clearer day, so maybe they'll look a little different. Even if they don't look too different, the Canyon is incredibly beautiful so it was fun to be able to see it again!

The trailhead was the same as the South Rim only today we walked across a bridge to get to the North Rim. These boulders in the Yellowstone River are just above the Upper Falls and...

this water is rushing towards the brink of the Upper Falls.

Upper Falls of the Yellowstone as seen from the Brink of the Lower Falls Trail. This trail descends 600 feet from the rim to the brink of the Lower Falls.

Crystal Falls, along the way to the Lower Falls.

Depending on the time of year, anywhere between 5,000 - 60,000 gallons per second of water plunges 308 feet over the Lower Falls.

From the brink of the Lower Falls you can see across the Canyon to the staircase that is UncleTom's Trail down into the Canyon from the South Rim. If you have enlarged the picture, you might be able to see the lower platform in the bottom left corner.

Down the Canyon.

Further along the trail we could look back at the people standing on the observation platform at the brink of the falls.

Also further along the trail was this sweet little falls just to our left.

We found this great lunch spot and...

fantastic view of the Lower Falls for our lunch view.

Our next stop was to take the Red Rock trail 500 feet down for a full-on view of the Lower Falls. We think these are the Red Rocks that were off to the right of the trail.

From above, looking down the Red Rock Trail to the lower viewing platform.

See the rock spires in the center of the above picture?

This osprey nest is sitting on top of those spires. A female is sitting on three eggs.

Lovely view down the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone for an overlook called the Grand View.

Today's hike:
Length - 6.84 miles
Duration - 4 hours, 21 minutes (including lunch)
Elevation gain - 1,080 feet
