Along the way we passed through El Malpais National Monument near Grants, NM. El Malpais means "the badlands" in Spanish, and here volcanic lava flows and cinder cones dominate the harsh landscape.
It looks like piles of jumbled asphalt, but that the remaining lava. There is supposed to be good hiking here, but we just passed through.
Sandstone bluffs and mesas border the eastern side of the monument, providing access the vast wilderness. Historic and archaeological sites provide reminders of the 10,000 years of human habitation in the area.
We travelled on I-40 all the way from Gallup to ABQ. Sometimes you just feel surrounded by all the trucks!
Carl, on the left, and Andrew unpacking the back window glass that was shipped from Jackson Center, Ohio, home to Airstream.
They were really impressed by the temporary repair, but the new glass is tinted so we won't have to keep the curtains closed all the time.
Andrew, in the foreground, is the Airstream "guy", and really knows his way around Airstreams. His father, known as Andy, started the Holiday Travel Trailer business years ago. There is an impressive collection of Airstream memorabilia in the main building.
