An Earth Odyssey

We went back to the Tablelands, in the southern part of Gros Morne Park, today. We had hoped to hike the Green Garden Trail but, the Information Center  at the edge of the Tablelands, kept us from the hike. It is over an hour's drive to the Tablelands and we wanted to get back in time for an evening program at the Rocky Harbour Visitor Center. We got a late start, about noon, and that was another reason we didn't have time for the hike.

A view of the Tablelands from the main highway, #430.

A geology exhibit at the Information Center showing plate tectonics and the formation of the Tablelands.

There were these charming tableaus showing the various scientific endeavors in the Park. This is a Geologist.

A Marine Biologist.

A Geomorphologist.

An Archaelogist.

A Botanist.

Downstairs in the Information Center there was a Gallery with Newfoundland works.

Skeins of died yarn.

A wheel of hand knitted gloves.

Lobster bouys.

Shore boats.

A beautifully carved boat suspended in the middle of the room.

Labrador Schooner. 1/2":1' scale. Created in 2005-06 by Roy Osmond. Over 700 hours of labour.

There was a patio off the Information Center building that provided a 180 degree view of the mountains, the Tableland and the lakes.  I tried to take a panorama picture but there was too much scenery to get it all in. If you put this picture next to the next picture and the the third picture you would see the full 180 degrees view.

This is the middle picture.

The final picture in the triptych.

This evening's program at the Rocky Harbour Visitor Center was entitled, "Gros Morne: An Earth Odyssey". An out-of-this-world, zany traveller is sent from another galaxy to discover the geology of Gros Morne and why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The opening scene for the program.

A very talented and creative Parks Canada Interpreter created a one hour program that included music, dance, props, special effects, and audience participation in a very clever way of telling the Gros Morne story.

After the show we introduced Mr. Spock to the alien. Both were very amused.

Finally, Frederick found a moose in the Information Center. He is looking him in the eye.
