Learning and Practicing & Rose Creek - 8/20/17

Today we practiced taking sun pictures so that we would fee more comfortabe taking pictures during the eclipse.
We didn't have a sun filter for our camera, but one of the other participants had an extra single use one that we used.

Our photography instructor is on the left and Terri, a high school science teacher who lent me the temporary filter, is on the right with her telescope. We are in front of the Lamar Buffalo Ranch education building.

The back of the education building along the shores of Rose Creek.

Rose Creek with the cabins above.

After hours of practice we were able to break for a hike up behind the Ranch. This is Rose Creek with little tiny flowers growing in the water.

A fairly recent example of the food chain. Don't look too closely!

Part way along the hike we realized that we didn't have our bear spray with us since we only anticipated a short hike and didn't take our packs. We turned back only to encounter Amanda, an instructor who was testing out the trail to see if it would be appropriate for her upcoming group. She had bear spray so we asked her if we could accompany her on her hike. We went as far as the pens that were used for the wolves when they were being reintroduced into the park and being acclimated in 1995.

View from the hills above the Lamar Buffalo Ranch which is down in the valley.

Today's hike:
Length - 3.39 miles (5.31 km)
Duration - 1 hour, 30 minutes
Elevation gain - 777 feet (190 meters)
