Right outside the city there are a number of horse ranches including Double Eagle Ranch where Mine That Bird was foaled in 2006. He is best know for winning the Kentucky Derby in 2009, at 50 to 1 odds.
Roswell, a County Seat, has a beautiful classic Courthouse.
Roswell is also the home to the New Mexico Military Institute, one of five military institutes in the US and the only one that is state supported.
The campus is lovely with all the Gothic Revival buildings built from buff brick. Providing 4 years of high school and 2 years of junior college, notable graduates include Sam Donaldson, Conrad Hilton, Paul Horgan, Roger Staubach and Owen Wilson.
Most of the first half of the drive was through some pretty flat country.
We are leaving the bottom third of the state and...
heading toward central New Mexico. There is a fair amount of cattle ranching. I wonder how many acres of this dry land it take to support 3 head of cattle?
As we approached the central part of the state, on the east side, we began to notice a few more trees.
We also passed these two large figures,...
one on either side of the highway. We have no clue as to the significance. Any ideas?!!
New Mexico ranch scene.
Santa Rosa, the town adjacent to the state park, is on historic Route 66. That seems to be a big deal around this part of New Mexico. Tucumcari, NM, just down the road about 60-miles from here, is pretty much Route 66 headquarters. We're not even tempted to go there.
There was a nice short hike along the shore of Santa Rosa Lake. And yes, this far north it is quite a bit colder. It's supposed to go down to freezing tonight.
Although it looks like sand, the sore of this lake is stone.
Today's hike:
Length - 2.90 miles
Duration 1 hour, 14 minutes
Elevation gain - 150 feet (17 floors on the Fitbit)
