Homestead Trail

Blog for August 18, 2016

With our new-found freedom (we have a car free of the Airstream! Hallelujah!!) we headed out to hike the Homestead Trail up on the ridge above Homer. The Homer information booklet led us to believe that we could hike two trail for a 7 mile trip and we accepted the offer by Carolyn and Ian to do a “one way”; they would pick us up at the end of the trail and drive us back to the start of the trail where we left our car.

However, I think it has been a while since someone has hiked the trails because they seem to all be skiing trails up on the ridge. We were stymied twice by the trail ending at a sign saying Private Property - Winter Ski Trail only. We only hiked out and back and Carolyn and Ian were off being on-call.

The hike up to the ridge was “worth it” because there were some stupendous views of Cook Inlet. Be sure to click on the pictures to enlarge them!)

This lovely family is from Virginia. Meet Richard and Michelle and their children Isabelle and Jason. They flew into Anchorage and will be traveling to many of the places we have been, including Denali. They are also planning of hiking the Harding Ice Fields Trail out of Seward. It was a real pleasure to meet them and to chat a while.

Today’s Hike:
Length - 3.88 miles
Duration - 2 hours, 10 minutes

Elevation gain - 630 feet (63 floors on the Fitbit)
