At last night’s Driver’s Meeting, JJ mentioned that when we passed through Tok on today’s route to Delta Junction, there was an RV washing place at a gas station right in the center of town. Many of us got an early start so that we would be able to stop at the RV wash and hope that we wouldn’t need a chisel to get the caked mud and gunk off the Airstream and tow vehicles.
Just outside Tok where the mountains are beginning to turn jagged and peaked again. The town of Tok was born in 1942 as a construction camp for the Alcan Highway and was called Tokyo Camp until anti-Japanese sentiment caused locals to shorten it to Tok.
I don’t have any pictures of us washing the vehicles, but the RV wash was easy to spot as we drove through town and saw that Airstreams lined up for a bath.
Outside Tok, on our way to Delta Junction, the scenery continued to get better and…
better.
Everything was find until we hit a 13 mile stretch of road construction. See the back of the Pilot Car? Our clean, shiny Airstream looked like that, again, after just 13 miles. How disappointing!!
Typical scenery for the day and…
we were lucky to see three moose along the roadside. This cow and another mama moose and her baby.
The Gerstle River Bridge is 1 of only 4 steel through truss-style bridges on the Alaska Highway.
Gerstle River - we passed a number of rivers flowing under bridges that look like this. There are several channels that have fairly fast flowing water.
Here we are at the campground in Delta Junction. This is the first campground in a couple of weeks that has trees and grass. Notice the clean Airstream and car - when we got here, the first thing we did was spray down the vehicles and use the soft brush to quickly remove the dirt from the road construction. We know it will just get dirty again, but it’s nice to have a clean Airstream for a few days.
