Cochrance - named for Sen. Matthew Henry Cochrane, who began the first large-scale cattle ranch in the area in the 1880's - is know locally for its homemade ice cream, made by the same family since 1948; hang gliding; horseback riding; and canoe trips down the Bow River. Stony Indian Reserve, 10 mi west on Hwy 1A, was the filming site of several movies, including Arthur Penn's "Legends of the Fall" and "Little Big Man," and of the television series "Lonesome Dove."
Now we haven't had ice cream for months, but with a description like the one above, I think we should at least check out how well AAA is doing in their local research. Yesterday, while we were on the pathway, we stopped a local couple to ask for directions and ask, "where's the ice cream shop?" and they knew exactly what we meant. Today, while visiting the local laundromat, we just drove by, you know, to check it out.
We decided that we would finish our chores, have dinner and then walk into town for some ice cream and forgo our usual nightly snack - yogurt & blueberries + 1 oz. of dark chocolate (for medicinal purposes), and a cup of tea.
Interesting pictograph. For a portion of the pathway into town, dogs can be off-leash. At the transition point, back on-leash, these signs appear.
Here's a happy man, eagerly awaiting his ice cream. We each had one scoop of Black Forest, chocolate with a hint of cherry, in a waffle cone.
Ice cream enjoyed, now it's time to start on the two mile hike back to the campground. MacKay's - it's what makes Cochrane famous. It's 9:30 p.m. It stays light until almost 11 p.m.
