Where the deer and the antelope play- and the bison

About 1:30 p.m. we crossed into South Dakota. The road went from two lanes to a divided four-lane highway. We can't say, "Gee, it's good to be back home", because we were here only two days when came to declare our residency. So far the only thing that looks familiar are all the South Dakota license plates that look just like the ones on our car and Airstream.

South Dakota welcome sign.

For the first 20 miles, or so, South Dakota looked just like the Nebraska prairie, but pretty soon the Black Hills were looming large on the horizon.

This bison greeted us at Wind Cave National Park. We didn't take the time to visit the park today, but we plan on returning during our stay in Custer State Park, only 20 miles away.

These Pronghorns, commonly referred to as antelope due to their similar appearance, live on the open grassland in Custer State Park.

In a little valley five miles from our campground, this Bison herd of mammas and their babies were enjoying the late afternoon.

When we went out later to find a trail we saw lots of deer. Five in our campground, and four or five other small groups within a three mile drive.

  1. Dale and Frederick it was good meeting you at Fort Robinson. Was wondering which of the campgrounds at Custer State Park you picked for your stay?

  2. Hi Gary,
Glad to get your question! We are staying in Blue Bell. It was a choice between Blue Bell and Game Lodge, the only two campgrounds that are open now. Game Lodge was billed as "Big Rig friendly" and we passed it on our way to Rapid City yesterday; it is located near the Peter Norbeck Visitor Center. From what we saw of Game Lodge from the road I think we chose the campground best suited for our style of camping. Blue Bell is nestled under huge Ponderosa Pines, has only 31 sites that are nicely spaced and spotlessly clean, heated restrooms with showers. It just so happens that the site that could accommodate our Airstream is 100 feet from the restroom building. This is not a problem since there are so few people here, it's actually very convenient.
We hope you continue to view the blog and we appreciate your comments!
    Best,
    Frederick & Dale
