Whitehorse - watch out for pirates

A "free" day - greatly appreciated after the long day yesterday. We found a grocery store - it turned out to be one on steroids! - and we stocked up for the next few days when we will be far, far away from civilization. We also found a hike, so it is turning out to be the perfect day - Frederick's birthday!! In a little while we will be going out to dinner and then a show, which in the Yukon means the Follies!!!

Scenes from Whitehorse -

How can you tell a car is from the Yukon? They all have these cords and plugs to keep the oil flowing so they can start their cars when it's -30 degrees centigrade.

I don't think I had ever seen a Yukon license plate before.

The view from the trail along Schwatka Lake on the outskirts of Whitehorse. Notice the float planes on the lake, ready to take you to the outback.

The first thing we did on the hike was climb a high sand dune which gave us a nice view of the surrounding mountains and lakes.

The trail went up and down the dunes before we travelled along the edge of the lake.

Half way around we passed a day camp/sailing school.

It was pirate day and Counselor Manuel was dressed as one.

So were Audrey and Callam.

Later, on the way back, Manuel had the kids on the lake in their sail boats.

A common sight on Schwatka Lake.

End of the hike, descending the sand dune by the power generating plant.
