When we arrived in Grande Prairie yesterday afternoon we were startled by these chartreuse fields. Since we didn't know what they were, we didn't include, in yesterday's blog, any of the pictures we took. This morning we found out that they are canola fields. The flowers will fade and produce little brown seeds that are processed for their oil.
Happy Trails RV park in the middle of the oil fields. There were not many overnighters, but many long-termers. As you can see, it's not like Jasper National Park!
The Happy Trails RV park also had this barrack-like housing, for the oil field workers.
We stopped at the Grande Prairie Costco (even though we had made a big Costco purchase in Calgary last week) and then pulled into the Petro-Canada gas bar. While we were there, another Airstream pulled in on their way to Dawson Creek and the Alaska Caravan. I went over to say "hello" and meet Pete and Betty Olsen, from Wexford, Pennsylvania.
The road from Grande Prairie to Dawson Creek could have been in northern Minnesota or Wisconsin. There were lots more of these canola fields.
Of course, there were the logging trucks and...
trucks with logs.
We passed through the burg of Beaver Lodge.
There is something about the north that encourages this type of community art.
We are now in British Columbia and have moved into the Pacific Time Zone. Three hours difference from New England.
Arriving at the Northern Lights RV park, the Alaska Caravan rallying spot, we were confronted by Airstreams.
Lots and lots of Airstreams and...
their tow vehicles - almost all pick-ups. Tomorrow at 3 pm we have our orientation meeting and then the Welcoming Banquet at 6 pm at a restaurant in town, Dawson Creek.
Thanks for the reminder about the time zones! 😀
