Last stop on the Great River Road

Baton Rouge to New Orleans, the last stop on our trip along the Mississippi, the Great River Road. We didn't travel right along the river today, but there was a lot of water. In fact, a good stretch of the road, about 30 miles, was basically a long bridge. It reminded us of the drive down the Florida Keys. This time we were driving between Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain.

Kind of swampy and boggy.

Every so often there would be a more open stretch of water.

Somehow people manage to live along this water although there were no exits from the road for 26 miles.

All the houses are built on stilts.

Lots of bridges driving through New Orleans.

When we leave New Orleans in a few days, we will be heading east to the Gulf Coast. We don't have any travel guides for that area so this afternoon we located a AAA office.

Sharon, at AAA, gave us lots of good information on seeing New Orleans and the maps and tour books for Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.
